San Diego County Office of Education

SDCOE's science outreach programs provide students the opportunity to examine scientific phenomena and principles through innovative, inquiry-based, standards-driven activities. These hands-on activities engage students of all ages on topics such as why a healthy environment is important to sustainable plant production, watershed issues, and how geology tells the planet's story.

Biodiesel & Algal Studies Group

Since 2009 Castle Park High students, with Dr. Pomeroy of UCSD, have learned to produce biodiesel from vegetable oil. Our booth demonstrates the step-by-step process of biodiesel synthesis, discusses the advantages of biodiesel over petroleum and outlines the ease of production. Our booth includes CAICE researchers who provide demonstrations concerning climate change and atmospheric chemistry. We also partner with Algenesis who demonstrate biodegradable materials that mimic plastics and foams.

The San Diego River Park Foundation

Discover the vital species of the San Diego River’s riparian ecosystem. Explore the diverse plant and animal life and their crucial roles in maintaining the environment's health and balance. Explore how birds, bats, bees, and butterflies act as ecosystem engineers. See how wildlife builders contribute to pollination, pest control, and biodiversity, supporting ecosystem health. Explore bio-indicator species to understand how aquatic life helps monitor and maintain a healthy ecosystem.

Sally Ride Science @ UC San Diego

The Sally Ride Science Academy offers fascinating and fun STEAM workshops for students entering grades 3 through 12. Our online and in-person workshops let students investigate coding, acting, space science, marine biology and more, as they immerse themselves in hands-on projects.
