Algae Foundation

Students will be introduced to the Algae Academy and have the opportunity to be hands-on with live algae! They can examine multiple algae under the microscope and sample a tabletop algae pond! Students can also participate in a seek-and-find activity, looking for algae as an ingredient in everyday items like toothpaste, ice cream, and more!

Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego

We will explore the biology and ecology of deep sea animals through two activities: 1) comparative anatomy of deep-sea crustaceans (visual examination of specimens with the naked eye and under the microscrope) and 2) exploring stomach contents of a deep-sea fish, the longnose lancetfish. Both activities will introduce and examine common morphological and behavioral adaptations to life in the deep sea. Specimens handled by the public will be frozen, thawed or stored in seawater.

La Jolla Institute for Immunology

We will review how your body develops immunity with antibodies. Visitors will be able to do antibody puzzles to discuss how they relate to viruses and vaccines. Separately, we will bring a prepared petri dish sealed with bacteria expressing green fluorescent protein (GFP) contained in a dark box. Visitors will shine a UV flashlight on the dish to see the bacteria glow. We will discuss the utility of GFP in immunology research.
