Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers at UC San Diego
We will be conducting a pH color change experiment using a pH indicator of boiled cabbage and small amounts of various household items as test samples. Participants may partake in choosing samples to test, and each iteration of the experiment is expected to take 1 minute per sample tested. This allows each participant to test a number of different samples and analyze them according to a provided visual to determine acidity and basicity and learn about the pH scale.
Lilly Biotechnology Center
Lilly Biotechnology Center will provide information about DNA and proteins, and how antibodies can be used to treat diseases like COVID-19.
UCSD Neurosciences Outreach
We will have sheep brains for participants to hold and examine, and ~20 animal brains to try to match the the animal in a guessing game!
San Diego Children's Discovery Museum
San Diego Children's Discovery Museum brings hands-on education to children ages 0-10. At our booth, we will provide two mobile exhibits featuring STEM concepts and engineering design processes. One exhibit will be our new "Operation Game" that highlights organs in the body and the other will be our Imagination Playground where children can construct cars, buildings, and anything they can dream of!
Marine Genome Project
Booth with fun activists for people of all ages showing how to extract DNA from strawberries, scuba diving equipment used to collect tissue samples from marine species, along with other activities relating to marine science and underwater exploration
Living Coast Discovery Center
Living Coast will provide a STEAM -focused activity and information on our school / camp / community programs. There will also be the opportunity for guests to learn about one of our animal ambassadors.
UCSD Biomedical Engineering Society
UCSD BMES will present a demonstration about the respiratory systems using an assembled model of the lungs. The model will demonstrate how the diaphragm works to breath in and out of the lungs. We will also have a poster to give students an opportunity to work through some bioengineering problems about the respiratory system (Ex: What device would you create to help someone with breathing problems? Someone with a collapsed lung? Someone with a diseased or failing lung?).
CREATE at UC San Diego
5/1: Get a close look at local nocturnal and diurnal animal specimens (not live) and learn about their traits and adaptations to our local climate.
5/7: Learn how to make UV Resin jewelry just in time for Mother's Day!
Live Well San Diego
See germs glow on your hands and how to properly wash them clean! Rub a small amount of a fluorescent gel on your hands to simulate germs when seen under ultra-violet light. Then wash your hands and let the ultra-violet light reveal how well you did!
